Chilled & Frozen Food Buyer

About the role

Our client is seeking a commercially‑minded Chilled & Frozen Food Buyer to join a dynamic procurement team in Durban. Reporting to the Head of Procurement, you will be responsible for sourcing, purchasing and coordinating chilled, frozen and meat products to ensure consistent availability and smooth order execution.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and evaluate domestic and international suppliers in line with the category strategy.
• Request quotations, compare offers and recommend preferred suppliers for approval.
• Negotiate pricing and terms within defined parameters and escalate high‑value negotiations when required.
• Monitor market trends, pricing and cost drivers to make data‑driven purchasing decisions.
• Maintain ongoing communication with suppliers to ensure continuity of supply and service levels.
• Conduct virtual supplier audits to verify compliance with product and quality standards.
• Assist in resolving quality issues and support supplier‑led promotional initiatives.
• Ensure all purchased products comply with food safety, labeling and other regulatory requirements.
• Prepare and present reports on procurement activity, market trends and supplier performance.
• Maintain accurate inventory records and track orders from placement through shipment.

Required profile

• Commercial mindset with a passion for the chilled and frozen food industry.
• Experience in procurement or buying of food products, preferably chilled/frozen items.
• Ability to work closely with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
• Strong analytical skills to monitor market trends and cost drivers.
