Buyers – Fresh Produce (2 positions)

About the role

Our client in the perishable retail industry is seeking two experienced Buyers for the fresh produce division. The role involves planning and executing buying strategies, negotiating with farmers and suppliers, and ensuring product availability while minimizing waste. You will work closely with marketing and store operations to drive sales growth and maintain high quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute buying strategy for fresh produce, securing best prices and quality.
• Negotiate contracts with farmers and suppliers.
• Develop and maintain relationships with growers, ensuring compliance with food safety and quality standards.
• Manage stock levels to optimise availability and reduce waste, shortages, and spoilage.
• Visit farms, markets and competitor sites to analyse trends, pricing and consumer demand.
• Process purchase orders, verify invoices and coordinate logistics.
• Collaborate with marketing and store teams on promotional activities.

Required profile

• Matric with a relevant degree.
• 2‑4 years of experience in fresh produce buying or a similar field.
• In‑depth knowledge of fruit and/or vegetables.
• Previous buying and trading experience.
• Management experience in a packhouse environment (advantageous).
• Strong analytical abilities and professional conduct.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Valid driver’s licence.

Required skills

• Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
