Automation Engineer

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join our client’s manufacturing team in Johannesburg East. The role focuses on enhancing existing automation systems, supporting new plant projects and ensuring reliable operation of control hardware and software.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and improve PLC programs, HMI interfaces and overall control architecture.
• Lead automation technicians during equipment repairs, installations and commissioning.
• Coordinate with external automation partners on design and implementation of new projects.
• Provide manufacturing insight for new product development, applying design‑for‑manufacturing principles.
• Support both local and international plant automation initiatives.

Required profile

• BEng in Mechatronics (or BTech/Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics, Electronics or Electrical).
• 5‑8 years of experience in an automation environment.
• 3‑4 years of design experience with automated machines covering mechanical, electrical, software and control aspects.
• Willingness to travel locally and internationally, with own transport and a valid driver’s licence.

• HMI design and development.
• Pneumatic control systems.
• Festo Vision Systems.
• E‑Plan for electrical schematics.
• Profinet, Modbus TCP and Ethernet/IP communication protocols.
