Auditor I (Compliance Audit) - Tax Audits

About the role

SARS is recruiting four energetic, results-oriented, self-driven Auditors for its Compliance Audit division in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Tax audits examine whether a taxpayer has correctly declared their tax liability, covering Personal Income Tax, Company Income Tax, VAT, Trust and PAYE. The successful candidate plans their own time and work, executes audits to meet targets and raises accurate assessments in line with legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, execute and finalise tax audits using SARS systems and relevant Acts, regulations and SOPs
• Analyse data and evidence, review risks and interpret disputes and taxpayer complaints
• Use digital information and systems to address audit risks, including eCommerce transactions
• Engage with Debt Management and litigation/dispute management, and testify in civil or criminal court where required
• Escalate serious tax offences and propose enhancements to policies and procedures
• Prepare reports and present to committees such as the Technical, Understatement, Large Assessment, Objections and National Appeals Committees
• Support account maintenance on penalties and interest and raise accurate assessments on SARS systems

Required profile

• National Diploma or Advanced Certificate equivalent to NQF level 6 in Taxation, Finance, Accounting or Auditing
• 3 years of experience in a tax audit environment
• Behavioural competencies: accountability, analytical thinking, attention to detail, drive for results, honesty and integrity

Candidates must comply with governance and compliance procedures, adhere to organisational policies and follow the Employment Equity policy; successful candidates undergo an oath of secrecy, pre-employment screening, case study, pre-assessment and psychometric assessment.
