Associate Professor & Head of School – Nursing

About the role

The University of the Free State seeks an experienced academic leader to serve as an Associate Professor (permanent) and Head of the School of Nursing (5‑year contract, renewable). The role combines senior teaching, research, and strategic management responsibilities within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in Faculty of Health Sciences management under the Dean.
• Lead the School of Nursing in research, scholarship, community engagement and transformation.
• Promote innovation in teaching and learning, including simulation and technology.
• Oversee curriculum development and review in line with SANC and CHE standards.
• Represent the School at national, regional and international nursing forums.
• Manage day‑to‑day operations, financial resources and strategic planning.
• Identify and secure third‑stream income to support core functions.

Required profile

• PhD (NQF Level 10) in Nursing, qualified as Associate Professor.
• Professional registration with the South African Nursing Council as Clinical Nurse and Midwife.
• Registered qualifications in Nursing Education and Nursing Administration/Management.
• Proven team‑lead experience in nursing.
• Minimum seven years of senior academic or managerial experience in nursing.
