Associate Attorney – Technology, Media & Telecom

About the role

We are seeking an Associate Attorney to join the Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) team within the Corporate and Commercial Department at our Johannesburg office. The role offers exposure to cutting‑edge technology transactions, data‑privacy matters and regulatory work in the TMT sector.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with POPIA‑related matters, including drafting complex opinions and supporting implementations.
• Vet, negotiate and draft agreements across the TMT sector.
• Provide advice on fintech and regulatory issues affecting TMT.
• Conduct legal research and draft opinions on technology and media law.
• Support due‑diligence processes and manage smaller matters independently.
• Draft, review and negotiate TMT contracts and related opinions.
• Apply knowledge of POPIA, PAIA, the Cybercrimes Act, ECTA, ECA, CPA and related legislation.
• Address social‑media legal issues.

Required profile

• Admitted attorney in South Africa with a strong academic record.
• Minimum of one year post‑articles experience in TMT law and data‑privacy law.
• Demonstrated experience drafting and vetting TMT agreements and providing legal opinions.
• In‑depth knowledge of POPIA, PAIA and comparable data‑privacy frameworks such as GDPR.
• Experience with telecommunications regulatory matters is an advantage.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation and client‑interaction skills.

Required skills

• Knowledge of POPIA, PAIA, Cybercrimes Act, ECTA, ECA, CPA.
• Familiarity with GDPR and other data‑privacy legislation.
