Assistant Accountant

About the role

We are seeking a proactive Assistant Accountant to support our South African Accountant in a well‑established organisation. The role offers exposure to the full accounting cycle, requiring strong numerical ability, attention to detail, and solid systems knowledge.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, bank accounts, and cashbook.
• Process accounts payable, accounts receivable, and supplier/customer transactions.
• Prepare journal entries, balance‑sheet reconciliations, and month‑end/year‑end closing activities.
• Assist with management accounts, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
• Handle VAT reconciliations and support statutory reporting.
• Support audit preparation and respond to auditor queries.
• Manage intercompany accounts, foreign‑currency transactions (EUR, USD) and monitor exchange‑rate impacts.
• Maintain the fixed‑asset register and contribute to cash‑flow reporting.

Required profile

• Relevant Accounting or Finance degree or equivalent tertiary qualification.
• Solid practical experience across the full accounting function in a commercial or corporate environment.
• Experience with foreign‑currency transactions, especially EUR and USD, is advantageous.
• Strong understanding of month‑end and year‑end procedures.

Required skills

• SAP (or similar ERP) experience.
• Oracle ERP experience.
• Proficiency with ERP accounting systems.
• Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
