Apprentice Driver/Operator/Maintainer – East Sussex

About the role

Join Harsco Rail as an Apprentice Driver/Operator/Maintainer and support the safe operation and maintenance of our railway track maintenance equipment across East Sussex. You will develop hands‑on skills in operating OTMs, performing grinder maintenance, and ensuring high machine availability.

Key responsibilities

• Drive, operate and maintain OTMs in compliance with safety and company standards.
• Perform grinder repairs, fault finding and routine maintenance.
• Maintain route cards, documentation, tooling, spare parts and consumables.
• Use IT systems (Rule Book, FAMS, Q‑Pulse, AARK) to record activities and update reports.
• Communicate regularly with the Control Centre and internal departments.
• Keep company vehicle to required standards and attend meetings as required.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and be flexible to work on other machines when needed.

Required profile

• Fully qualified Driver Operator Maintainer with track safety qualifications (PTS and/or DP).
• Understanding of drivers’ rules, health & safety requirements and company policies.
• Team player with strong interpersonal skills and a proactive, process‑driven attitude.

Required skills

• IT proficiency: Outlook, Excel, Word, Q‑Pulse and AARK systems.
• Knowledge of railway maintenance machines and systems.
• Familiarity with route planning and documentation.
