Academic Head of Department – Philosophy & Classics

About the role

The University of the Free State is appointing an Academic Head of Department for Philosophy and Classics on a five‑year contract, with the possibility of renewal. The role provides strategic academic leadership, overseeing teaching, research and administrative functions to position the department as a leader in its field.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement teaching and research strategies for the department.
• Direct academic debate, shape departmental culture and climate.
• Manage departmental finances, including annual budgeting and fund allocation.
• Coordinate staff, student activities and administrative duties.
• Mentor and motivate academic staff, fostering collaboration.
• Represent the department in faculty, university and external forums.
• Ensure effective internal and external communication and liaison.
• Participate actively in university governance structures such as the Senate.

Required profile

• Current full‑time permanent academic staff member of the Department of Philosophy and Classics.
• PhD or equivalent qualification in Philosophy, Classics or a related discipline (SAQA‑accredited if obtained abroad).
• Proven record of research and teaching excellence.
• Demonstrated experience in academic leadership or management.
• South African citizenship or valid work permit.
