VAT Accountant

About the role

Old Mutual is looking for a VAT Accountant in Pinelands. The role covers the preparation, calculation, submission and payment of VAT, VAT health checks and VAT reporting for the OML Group, working closely with the VAT Lead.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and submit monthly VAT returns for the OML Group and monitor monthly VAT compliance within business units.
• Support the VAT Lead with VAT apportionment methodology, implementation, monitoring, review and compliance, and with VAT registrations and de-registrations to SARS.
• Review VAT reconciliations and compliance documents, reconcile VAT control accounts and clear outstanding items monthly.
• Capture VAT payments, prepare VAT reconciliation journals and support the VAT function with data analytics, tax technology and systems expertise.
• Perform VAT health checks and assist with SARS engagements such as objections, transaction analysis and VAT projects.
• Prepare monthly VAT dashboards, analytics and reports, including Konsise reporting, with commentary on variances and key VAT metrics.
• Keep up to date with VAT legislation, interpret the VAT Act, advise on minimising VAT liabilities and implement tax risk minimisation strategies.
• Contribute to Group Tax Policies, standard operating procedures and tax systems planning, and identify tax planning opportunities.

Required profile

• Relevant accounting qualification.
• H Dip Tax or Tax Honours (or study in progress) is advantageous.
• 2+ years of tax compliance experience is advantageous.
• Good understanding of financial services and tax processes is essential.
• Knowledge of the VAT Act is advantageous.

• Strong Excel skills and technology-focused problem solving are advantageous.
• Accounting, database reporting, data controls and management reporting.
