Unit Coordinator – Small Animal Section (Veterinary Hospital)

About the role

The University of Pretoria’s Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital is seeking a qualified veterinary nurse to act as Unit Coordinator for the Small Animal Section, overseeing Surgery, Medicine, Reproduction and the Blood Bank.

Key responsibilities

• Co‑ordinate the daily operations of the Small Animal Section (Surgery, Medicine, Reproduction and Blood Bank).
• Provide outstanding client service and ensure clinic hygiene, bio‑security and equipment maintenance.
• Supervise and evaluate support staff, arrange training and manage staff schedules.
• Control expenditure, assist with budgeting for capital equipment and cost estimates for procedures.
• Communicate with pet owners and maintain accurate records.

Required profile

• Diploma or Degree in Veterinary Nursing, registered with the South African Veterinary Council.
• Minimum four years of veterinary nursing experience, primarily with small animals.
• Ability to work under pressure, weekends and outside normal hours.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.

Required skills

• Computer literacy (office software, record‑keeping systems).
• Knowledge of bio‑security procedures and handling of small and large animals.
