Superintendent – Instrumentation

About the role

Join Boshoek Smelter and lead a skilled technical team responsible for the reliability, performance and continuous improvement of plant instrumentation, PLC, SCADA and control systems. The Superintendent (Instrumentation) will ensure safe, efficient and reliable operations in a dynamic smelting environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Instrumentation team to achieve operational, maintenance and reliability targets.
• Provide technical leadership and governance for all plant instrumentation, PLC, SCADA and control systems.
• Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies for instrumentation assets.
• Lead fault finding, root‑cause analysis and failure investigations related to control and instrumentation systems.
• Oversee shutdown planning, execution and post‑shutdown performance reviews.
• Manage instrumentation‑related capital projects, upgrades and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with engineering standards, statutory requirements, HSEC standards and company procedures.

Required profile

• Degree or National Diploma (NQF 6 or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation or Electronic/Mechatronic Engineering, or an Instrumentation Trade Test with a National N Diploma.
• 8–10 years’ experience in industrial instrumentation, control systems and process optimisation within heavy industry, mining, smelting or metallurgical operations.
• 3–5 years’ leadership or supervisory experience.

Required skills

• PLC programming and troubleshooting.
• SCADA and DCS programming.
• Fault finding and root‑cause analysis of control systems.
• Experience with SAP PM, MES and advanced maintenance systems.
• Project management using MS Projects.
