SQL Database Administrator

About the role

We are seeking an experienced SQL Database Administrator to join our Durban office for a 12‑month fixed‑term contract, with the possibility of renewal. The role focuses on designing, implementing and maintaining high‑availability and disaster‑recovery solutions across a large, enterprise‑grade database estate.

Key responsibilities

• Design and operate high‑availability and disaster‑recovery architectures (clustering, availability groups, replication).
• Develop and manage complex data movement and replication frameworks.
• Monitor database performance, stability and reliability, and proactively resolve issues.
• Conduct advanced performance tuning using execution plans, wait statistics and profiling tools.
• Investigate incidents, perform root‑cause analysis and implement remediation strategies.
• Drive automation initiatives using scripting and self‑service tooling.
• Support infrastructure modernization projects, including cloud adoption and optimisation.
• Ensure security, compliance and governance through encryption, auditing and access management.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks and operational standards.
• Mentor junior DBAs and provide after‑hours incident response when required.

Required profile

• 6+ years of progressive database administration experience in enterprise environments.
• Relevant degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline.
• Proven experience with SQL Server (or similar RDBMS) and PostgreSQL.
• Strong background in high‑availability, disaster‑recovery and replication technologies.
• Advanced skills in performance tuning and query optimisation.
• Experience with automation and scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python).
