Shaft Timberman

About the role

The Shaft Timberman will join the Engineering – Infrastructure team at South Deep Gold Mine, performing essential construction and maintenance tasks on the shaft and shaft stations. The role focuses on ensuring safe, compliant operations while supporting blasting activities and routine inspections.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out basic construction work such as concrete laying, water‑line installation, erecting signage and site barricading.
• Assist artisans with equipment maintenance and reef pulling.
• Conduct weekly inspections of hanging side, footwall and shaft barrel to verify safety.
• Control and handle explosives for blasting in line with safety procedures.
• Perform pre‑work risk assessments and participate in safety meetings.
• Schedule and deliver work within tight deadlines while maintaining a zero‑harm culture.

Required profile

• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Onsetter Certificate and Blasting Certificate applicable to hard‑rock mining.
• Minimum 2 years experience in shaft construction or maintenance environments.
• Medically fit for underground work and able to pass heat‑tolerance screening.
• Demonstrated safety leadership and strong communication skills.

Required skills
