Senior Underwriting Manager – Body Corporate

About the role

The client, a leading South African financial services group, is seeking a Senior Underwriting Manager for its Body Corporate line of business in Gauteng. This senior position provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to grow the portfolio, increase market share and ensure profitability.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and execution of the functional strategy for the Specialist Body Corporate division, monitoring macro trends and competitive dynamics.
• Own the divisional budget, track Gross Written Premium, policies and risk exposure against targets.
• Monitor loss ratios, IBNR impacts and claims performance to maintain financial discipline.
• Oversee risk management frameworks, policy wordings and annual reinsurance treaty renewals.
• Drive product development, launch and refinement of Body Corporate insurance suites.
• Manage distribution channels, including brokers, managing agents and group schemes, to optimise client acquisition and retention.
• Ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulations such as Treating Customers Fairly.
• Lead marketing, lead‑generation and Voice of the Customer initiatives to enhance brand positioning.
• Coach and develop a high‑performing team, overseeing succession planning and performance management.

Required profile

• Grade 12 / SAQA accredited equivalent, relevant business degree and FAIS‑recognised qualification.
• AIISA or FIISA qualification and full compliance with FSCA Fit and Proper requirements.
• Over 10 years of specialist experience in body corporate insurance and 6‑10+ years of managerial experience.
• Strong commercial and financial acumen with knowledge of liability markets and reinsurance structures.
• Proven strategic and analytical capability, stakeholder management and process optimisation skills.
