Senior Tier 2 Network Engineer (ISP)

About the role

Comtel Communications, a South African ISP, is looking for a senior Tier 2 Network Engineer to join its Technical Operations team. You will work on carrier‑grade infrastructure, troubleshoot complex issues, and help expand the network while mentoring junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and support core routers, aggregation switches and GPON OLTs.
• Configure BGP, OSPF, VLANs, QoS, PPPoE, DHCP, IPv4/IPv6, ACLs, VRRP, CGNAT and RADIUS.
• Provision customers, manage PPPoE, static IP allocation and VLAN assignments.
• Monitor network performance with LibreNMS, Zabbix, Grafana, NetBox and Syslog.
• Perform advanced fault diagnosis, root‑cause analysis and respond to major incidents.
• Commission OLTs, POP infrastructure, rack deployments, fibre expansion and wireless backhaul links.
• Maintain network diagrams, IP addressing plans and configuration backups.
• Participate in change management, capacity planning and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• 3–5 years of experience in an ISP or telecommunications environment.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and solid understanding of TCP/IP networking.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Ability to work on‑call and participate in after‑hours standby roster.

• MikroTik RouterOS, Ubiquiti networking equipment.
• Wireless backhaul technologies.
