Senior State Law Advisor – Legislation (Bhisho)

About the role

The Eastern Cape Government seeks a Senior State Law Advisor to lead legislative drafting and provide high‑level legal advice to the Office of the Premier and provincial departments.

Key responsibilities

• Draft legislation for all client departments and ensure alignment with national statutes.
• Provide legal opinions and advice on constitutional, administrative and statutory matters.
• Conduct desktop analysis of existing legislation and research constitutional court judgments.
• Support policy formulation, draft Bills, and assist with public consultation processes.
• Coordinate the Executive Council approval process and prepare submission documents for the Legislature.
• Supervise and manage the Legislation Directorate, develop operational plans and monitor performance.

Required profile

• National Senior Certificate and LLB (or equivalent as determined by the Minister of Justice).
• Minimum eight (8) years post‑qualification litigation or advisory experience.
• Admission as an Attorney or Advocate and a valid driver’s licence.
• Qualification in Legislative Drafting is an advantage.
• Sound knowledge of constitutional and administrative law, legislative drafting and legal research.
• Computer literacy and strong administrative skills.
