Senior Scientist – Cardiovascular Research

About the role

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) seeks a qualified Senior Scientist to lead and execute cardiovascular research projects, contributing to new knowledge through study design, data collection, analysis and scientific writing.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct innovative cardiovascular research and publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Lead at least two research projects, overseeing design, data collection, analysis and interpretation.
• Prepare high‑quality scientific publications, including journal articles, book chapters and technical reports.
• Mentor emerging researchers, supervise postgraduate students and guide team members.
• Develop and manage research grant applications, budgets and risk‑management processes.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in a relevant field (PhD candidate in final year acceptable).
• Minimum five years of cardiovascular research experience.
• At least five peer‑reviewed publications, with three as first or senior author.
• Successful grant application of ≥ R100,000 and supervision of two postgraduate graduates.
• Proven ability to translate research into public policy or practice.
