Senior Python Back-End Engineer

About the role

Old Mutual is looking for a Senior Python Back‑End Engineer to design and deliver serverless solutions that support our African growth story. You will work closely with the Product Owner and Chapter Leader to translate business requirements into reliable, zero‑downtime services.

Key responsibilities

• Build production‑ready solutions from product requirements using a serverless architecture.
• Develop proof‑of‑concepts, demonstrate them and gather feedback.
• Maintain highly available services with zero downtime.
• Write clean, testable Python code and automate repetitive tasks.
• Review, debug and optimise existing code bases.
• Analyse operational feasibility and follow the full software development lifecycle.
• Mentor junior engineers and share best practices.
• Collaborate with the team using agile tools such as JIRA and document work in Confluence.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a back‑end developer building serverless applications.
• Strong understanding of AWS services (Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, API Gateway).
• Hands‑on experience with Terraform, Docker, Docker‑Compose and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions).
• Familiarity with Python 3.9, Pytest, REST APIs, OpenAPI/Swagger and Makefile workflows.
• Ability to work in an agile environment and communicate proactively.
• Relevant degree or postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 7 or equivalent).
