Senior Professional Nurse – Medical Ward

About the role

Mediclinic is seeking a Senior Professional Nurse to support the Unit Manager on a medical ward. The role combines direct patient care with leadership duties, ensuring a safe and positive experience for clients while mentoring new and student nurses.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive, safe patient care and mitigate clinical risks in line with quality standards.
• Manage the overall client experience on the ward.
• Optimize staffing resources through effective recruitment, retention and utilisation.
• Develop staff competence through continuous assessment, training and mentorship.
• Assist in controlling operational expenses, including stock and capital management.

Required profile

• Professional Nurse qualification; postgraduate diploma in nursing for specialist units.
• Minimum 3 years of professional nursing experience in a hospital setting.
• At least 1 year of mentorship experience supervising new or student nurses.

Required skills

• Pharmacology knowledge.
• Nursing record keeping and documentation.
• Proficiency in nursing processes and procedures.
• Computer literacy – Microsoft Office.
• Understanding of relevant nursing legislation.
• Infection prevention and control practices.
• Scientific nursing principles and audit of patient records.
• Patient assessment and development/modification of nursing care plans.
• Scope of practice for nurse practitioners.
• Advanced/Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support certification.
• Risk identification, analysis and interpretation skills.
• Mentorship and coaching abilities.
