Senior Professional Nurse – Medical

About the role

The Senior Professional Nurse supports the Unit Manager in delivering safe, high‑quality patient care within Mediclinic’s medical unit. The role combines direct clinical duties with mentorship of new and student nurses, ensuring a positive client experience and adherence to clinical standards.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive patient care while mitigating clinical risks and meeting quality standards.
• Coordinate the client experience and ensure a safe environment.
• Manage staffing resources to optimise supply, retention and utilisation.
• Mentor and develop nursing staff through continuous assessment and training.
• Assist in controlling operational expenses, including stock and capital management.

Required profile

• Professional Nurse qualification.
• Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing for specialist units (e.g., Peri‑operative Nursing).
• Minimum 3 years of hospital nursing experience.
• At least 1 year of mentorship experience.

Required skills

• Pharmacology knowledge.
• Nursing record keeping and documentation.
• Proficiency in nursing processes and procedures.
• Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Office.
• Understanding of relevant nursing legislation.
• Infection prevention and control practices.
• Scientific nursing principles and audit of patient records.
• Patient assessment and care‑plan development.
• Scope of practice for nurse practitioners.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Risk identification and analysis.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Mentorship capabilities.
