About the role

The Senior Pharmacist will lead pharmacy services at Life Eugene Marais Hospital, reporting to the Pharmacy Manager. This role ensures medication safety, regulatory compliance, and optimal stock management to support patient care.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage medication risk by reporting 100% of adverse events, conducting root‑cause analyses and implementing corrective actions.
  • Perform quarterly trend analyses of medication incidents and develop action plans with the Pharmacy Manager.
  • Report ethical stock shortages, investigate causes, and implement remedial actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Review and improve pharmacy medication management processes and enforce best‑practice solutions.
  • Develop and execute pharmacy policies, identify compliance gaps through QMS reviews, and drive corrective actions.
  • Assist with audits (SAPC, MSA, OHSC, EMS) and ensure all staff work within their scope of practice.
  • Manage ethical product issuing, replenish stock to wards and theatres, and act on customer satisfaction survey feedback.
  • Recruit, retain, motivate and develop pharmacy staff in line with LHC people policies.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels, communicate alternatives during shortages, and manage dead‑stock reduction.

Required profile

  • Proven experience in hospital pharmacy operations and medication safety.
  • Strong analytical skills for incident trend analysis and root‑cause investigations.
  • Ability to develop and enforce pharmacy policies and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Experience coordinating audits and working with Quality Management Systems.
  • Effective communication with clinical teams, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Leadership capability to manage, develop and motivate pharmacy staff.
