Senior Mechanical Engineer – Platinum Mining Project (Johannesburg/Zimbabwe)

About the role

A leading international mining company is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical discipline on a major platinum mining project. The role is based in Bryanston, Johannesburg, with regular travel and extended on‑site assignments in Zimbabwe during construction, commissioning and start‑up. It is initially a 12‑month fixed‑term contract with strong extension potential.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical engineering discipline across all project phases, reviewing and approving deliverables, specifications and calculations.
• Ensure engineering compliance with project standards, manage technical risks, and participate in HAZOPs, design reviews and change management.
• Lead technical bid evaluations, vendor assessments, and support factory acceptance tests, inspections and quality reviews.
• Provide senior technical support during construction, resolve complex site challenges, and conduct engineering audits.
• Drive mechanical commissioning from C1 to C5, oversee system testing, handover and support plant start‑up.
• Champion safety and quality, ensuring compliance with statutory and company engineering standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; professional registration with ECSA (PrEng) or eligibility.
• Valid passport with ability to travel internationally.
• 12–15 years of mechanical engineering experience in mining, mineral processing or heavy industry, including EPCM delivery.
• Proven experience on large‑scale greenfield and brownfield mining projects and mechanical equipment design, installation and commissioning.
• Strong contractor and vendor management experience and demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
• Platinum processing plant experience is highly advantageous.
