Senior Legal Counsel – Transactional Banking

About the role

The Transactional Banking Legal Team is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to lead legal risk management for the Pan‑Africa Cash Management business. You will act as the primary legal partner for the Cash Management team, providing proactive advice on banking products, payments systems, and digital asset regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Identify, mitigate and manage legal risk across cash management, payments, liquidity and treasury services.
• Provide day‑to‑day legal advice to the Cash Management team on product design, regulatory compliance and contractual matters.
• Manage external counsel engagements and represent AGL on industry forums.
• Develop and embed legal policies and controls throughout the business.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional partners to ensure alignment of legal, risk and commercial objectives.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of South African banking law and financial regulations.
• Deep knowledge of transactional banking products, payments systems, cash pooling, treasury services and digital/crypto asset regulations.
• Demonstrated relationship‑management and leadership skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to supervise others when required.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.

Required skills

• Expertise in banking law and financial regulatory frameworks.
• Knowledge of payments legislation, national payment system directives, and digital asset regulations.
• Familiarity with cash management, liquidity, and treasury product structures.
