Senior Java Software Engineer – Lead & Mentor Role

About the role

We are seeking a senior Java Software Engineer to join our team in Cape Town. You will work closely with experienced engineers, customers, and product teams to design, build, and maintain high‑impact software solutions across telecommunications, automation, payments, mapping and systems integration.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of Java developers.
• Participate actively in software design, coding, and code reviews.
• Contribute to architectural direction and technical standards.
• Collaborate with product, QA and other engineering teams to deliver quality releases.
• Drive best practices, continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of professional Java development experience.
• At least 2 years in a leadership or team‑lead role.
• Relevant degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Required skills

• Java programming.
• HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
• SQL and relational database concepts.
• Hibernate or similar ORM frameworks.
• Java application servers/servlet containers (Tomcat, Jetty, GlassFish).
• IDE tools such as IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse or NetBeans.
• Experience with MySQL, Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server.
