Senior Director of Communication & Marketing

About the role

The University of the Free State seeks a senior leader to shape and execute its communication and marketing strategy. Reporting to senior university leadership, the role will drive brand consistency, reputation management and stakeholder engagement across all campuses.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement integrated communication strategies aligned with Vision 130 and institutional priorities.
• Lead marketing, branding and advertising functions, ensuring a coherent institutional narrative.
• Oversee internal, external and digital communication channels, including the university website.
• Manage media relations, proactive and reactive engagement, and monitor reputation metrics.
• Coordinate crisis communication protocols and provide strategic advice during incidents.
• Enhance national and international visibility through student recruitment, fundraising, alumni and research promotion.
• Lead the Communication and Marketing Department, handling performance management, workforce planning and budget allocation.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field.
• Extensive senior‑level experience in strategic communication and marketing, preferably in higher education or a large organization.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage multi‑year budgets.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and a track record of enhancing institutional reputation.
