Senior Back‑end Engineer (Drupal)

About the role

VML, part of WPP, is looking for a Senior Back‑end Engineer with strong Drupal expertise to join its South Africa development team. You will be responsible for building, enhancing and maintaining secure, high‑performance web applications that support leading global brands.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable web applications using PHP and Drupal.
• Collaborate with designers, project managers and other developers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code following best‑practice standards.
• Participate in architectural discussions and suggest system improvements.
• Conduct thorough testing, debugging and code reviews to ensure quality and stability.
• Identify performance bottlenecks and implement optimisations.
• Stay current with emerging PHP/Drupal trends and integrate relevant technologies.
• Mentor junior developers and support their technical growth.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 4 years of professional PHP development experience.
• Proven experience building and maintaining Drupal‑based solutions.
• Strong problem‑solving abilities and attention to detail.
