Senior Attorney – Conservation Law (Hybrid, Cape Town)

About the role
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is seeking a Senior Attorney to provide high‑value legal services on complex, mission‑critical matters. Based in the Tokai office in Cape Town, this hybrid role supports conservation programmes across South Africa and Zambia while ensuring all transactions align with TNC’s mission and risk‑management standards.
Key responsibilities
- Structure and advise on activities that advance Conservancy goals, including grants, leases, licenses, purchases, sales, insurance and easements.
- Draft, review and negotiate contracts and organizational documents.
- Influence programme decision‑makers through clear communication of legal concepts.
- Manage outside counsel and supervise junior attorneys, paralegals and support staff.
- Serve as the primary legal contact for clients in South Africa, Zambia and other assigned geographies.
- Lead special projects and provide legal guidance on financing transactions and non‑profit law.
- Travel occasionally and work flexible hours as needed.
Required profile
- Juris Doctorate (or equivalent) and a current South African law licence.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant legal experience, or 3 years with significant responsibility for a geographic area or subject‑matter expertise.
- Proven experience negotiating complex transactions and agreements.
- Strong understanding of South African legal and regulatory frameworks.
- In‑house or law‑firm experience advising senior management and sophisticated clients.
- Experience supervising staff and managing multiple projects.
- Excellent legal research abilities and familiarity with current trends in financing and non‑profit law.
- Ability to work effectively across cultures.
