Second Engineer – Port Operations

About the role

The Second Engineer – Port Operations joins the engine‑room management team of a harbour craft, reporting to the Chief Engineer Officer. The role ensures safe, efficient operation and maintenance of all plant, equipment and machinery while supporting watch‑keeping duties.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out independent watch‑keeping duties in the engine room.
• Perform routine visual inspections, take and record readings, soundings and pressure levels.
• Monitor and adjust liquid and pressure levels, top‑up fluids, and ensure correct operation of propulsion and generator systems.
• Prepare main propulsion machinery for start‑up and assist with emergency shutdowns.
• Maintain, repair, disassemble and reassemble equipment and replace defective components.
• Test machinery, keep the engine room clean, manage waste and spillages.
• Report any anomalies to the Chief Engineer and maintain accurate logbooks.
• Train junior deck and engine‑room personnel as required.

Required profile

• Certificate of Competency as Second Engineer (Port Operations) or equivalent qualification (Motorman HG, Officer in charge of engineering watch, Designated Duty Engineer, Chief Engineer Officer <1500 kW).
• Knowledge of risk and occupational safety, quality management systems, statutory and regulatory bodies, environmental management principles, Merchant Shipping Act and SAMSA regulations.
• Ability to lead, make decisions, communicate effectively and manage subordinates.
