Rock Engineer – Vaal Reefs Area

About the role

The Rock Engineer will apply rock mechanics expertise to ensure safe, stable and economically optimal extraction of mineral resources in the Vaal Reefs deep‑level mining environment. Reporting to the Chief Rock Engineer, the role supports employee safety, legal compliance and continuous operational continuity.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Ground Control Management Plans and ensure compliance with the mine’s Code of Practice.
• Design, review and approve support systems and mining layouts from a geotechnical perspective.
• Monitor seismic activity, investigate events and recommend mitigation strategies.
• Identify rock‑related hazards, participate in risk assessments and support Zero Harm initiatives.
• Produce regular geotechnical reports, analyse monitoring data and maintain databases.
• Train supervisors and crews, promote rock engineering awareness and mentor junior staff.
• Ensure statutory compliance, facilitate audits and maintain required documentation.

Required profile

• Qualified engineer with experience in deep‑level gold mining environments.
• Strong understanding of ground control, seismic risk and rock burst phenomena.
• Proven ability to make sound engineering decisions under challenging conditions.
