Research Intern – 3‑Month Placement at Wits RHI

About the role

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is offering a three‑month research internship in its Clinical Research Site located at 7 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg. The intern will support day‑to‑day research activities across laboratory, data management, community recruitment and regulatory compliance for ongoing studies.

Key responsibilities

• Assist medical technicians with stock control, sample capture, storage and shipment using the LDMS platform.
• Prepare and file laboratory documents, shipment records, meeting minutes and other study paperwork.
• Support regulatory officers by maintaining filing systems, updating Excel trackers and ensuring GCP training is up to date.
• Promote studies in the community, conduct presentations, radio talks and distribute brochures to meet recruitment targets.
• Screen and consent participants, schedule clinic visits, record screening data and administer study questionnaires.
• Contact participants to confirm appointments, arrange home visits and address study‑related queries.
• Verify transcription accuracy from source documents to Case Report Forms (CRF) and correct any errors.

Required profile

• Interest in clinical research and public health.
• Willingness to follow standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines.
• Good communication skills for community outreach and participant interaction.

Required skills

• Experience with LDMS (Laboratory Data Management System) or similar sample tracking tools.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for maintaining trackers and logs.
• Understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements.
• Ability to enter and verify data in Case Report Forms (CRF).
• Basic laboratory sample handling and documentation.
