Registered Nurse – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

About the role

The Professional Nurse/Clinical Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides holistic, person‑centered nursing care to newborn patients and their families. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the nurse assesses, plans and implements individualized care, acting as a patient advocate and coordinating with physicians and other health professionals.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as a clinical resource, assisting staff in assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting nursing care in the NICU.
• Ensure clear communication with families, health professionals and nursing management to resolve patient‑care issues.
• Assess, plan and deliver advanced nursing care in accordance with SOPs, nursing theory and medical direction.
• Initiate and direct emergency treatment (RESUS) for any patient in the hospital.
• Interview patients and families to gather background information and identify problems.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team rounds, develop nursing care plans and coordinate patient services.
• Prepare shift documentation reflecting patient status, staffing ratios and identified problems.
• Contribute to policy and procedure development and quality‑risk management initiatives.

Required profile

• Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
• Thorough knowledge of general and specialized nursing theory and practice.
• Extensive understanding of modern nursing care principles and practices.

Required skills

• Proficiency with electronic patient records and e‑scripts systems.
• Ability to perform RESUS (emergency) interventions.
