Qualified Blood Bank Technician / Technologist

About the role

The South African National Blood Service is seeking a qualified Blood Bank Technician and Technologist to perform routine manual and automated testing in its blood bank laboratory. The role involves compatibility testing, post‑natal investigations and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations, all carried out in line with SOPs and national standards.

Key responsibilities

• Execute all operational testing functions (manual and automated) within required timeframes and according to SOPs.
• Monitor blood and blood‑product stock levels, report expired units and manage reagent receipt and storage.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, perform daily cleaning, temperature checks and report any defects.
• Dispose of medical waste following SOPs, prepare waste‑traceability documentation and oversee waste weighing.
• Document customer complaints, compliments or queries and forward them to the supervisor.
• Verify test results performed by junior staff and ensure compliance with quality and accreditation standards.

Required profile

• Understanding of Standard Operating Procedures and South African blood transfusion standards.
• Ability to work accurately under time pressure and maintain detailed records.
• Commitment to safety, quality improvement and SHEQ requirements.
