Professional Nurse – Student Health Services

About the role

The University of Pretoria’s Department of Student Affairs is seeking a Professional Nurse to deliver comprehensive primary health‑care services to its student community. You will assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions while providing specialised sexual and reproductive health care, minor procedures and health promotion across campus.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct physical assessments, diagnose illnesses and prescribe appropriate treatment, including virtual consultations when required.
• Perform health screenings (blood glucose, haemoglobin, urine, pregnancy, eye tests) and interpret results to guide care.
• Dispense prescribed medication, administer immunisations and provide family‑planning, contraception, HIV testing and gynaecological examinations.
• Carry out minor surgical procedures, wound care and emergency treatment within scope of practice.
• Support health awareness campaigns, seminars and training sessions for students.
• Maintain accurate patient records, manage stock and ensure compliance with SANC and relevant health legislation.
• Mentor and supervise nursing interns.

Required profile

• 4‑year Diploma or Degree in Nursing (General, Community Health, Psychiatry, Midwifery).
• National/Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care (Primary Health Care).
• 3–5 years’ experience in primary health‑care, including diagnosis, treatment, pharmacology, sexual and reproductive health counselling and emergency procedures.
• Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Family Planning Certificate and a Certificate/License in Dispensing.
• Valid driver’s licence and commitment to continuous professional development.
