Pharmacy Assistant (Post Basic)

About the role

We are looking for a Post‑Basic Pharmacy Assistant to support safe and effective pharmaceutical services at Medicentres Pharmacy. Working under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, you will assist with dispensing, stock control and daily pharmacy operations in line with South African Pharmacy Council standards and Good Pharmacy Practice.

Key responsibilities

• Read and prepare prescriptions, select, manipulate or compound medicines, label and supply them after pharmacist evaluation.
• Control distribution and stock of Schedule 1‑4 medicines, including ordering, receiving, checking expiries and shelving.
• Assist with non‑sterile compounding and preparation of scheduled substances following approved SOPs.
• Bill medication on prescription charts and reconcile invoices.
• Maintain accurate pharmacy records, perform stock takes, investigate variances and ensure no expired stock remains on shelves.
• Process patient credits, manage emergency cupboard replenishment and TPN ordering.
• Monitor room and fridge temperatures, and support overall dispensary cleanliness.
• Provide health‑promotion information and instructions on correct medicine use to patients.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) qualification.
• Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council as a Post‑Basic Pharmacy Assistant.
• Computer literacy.
• 1‑2 years of retail and hospital pharmacy experience (private hospital experience advantageous).
• Ability to work under pressure, independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness to perform shift work and take ownership of tasks.
