Pharmacist

About the role

The Hospital Pharmacist will join the multidisciplinary team at Osindisweni Hospital in Verulam, KwaZulu‑Natal. This full‑time, on‑site position involves dispensing medications, verifying prescriptions and providing medication counselling to patients and caregivers in a busy public‑sector environment.

Key responsibilities

• Accurately dispense prescribed medicines and verify prescription appropriateness.
• Review medication orders for drug interactions, contraindications and dosage accuracy.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses and other clinicians to optimise pharmacotherapy.
• Manage pharmacy stock, monitor expiry dates, ensure proper storage including cold‑chain handling and maintain formulary compliance.
• Maintain accurate medication records in line with legal and institutional requirements.
• Participate in medication safety initiatives, clinical audits and ward rounds as needed.
• Provide training and guidance to pharmacy support staff and students.

Required profile

• Qualified pharmacist (Bachelor of Pharmacy or equivalent) with current registration or eligibility for registration with the relevant Pharmacy Council.
• Demonstrated clinical pharmacy competence, including prescription evaluation and dosage calculation.
• Experience in a hospital or clinical pharmacy setting is strongly preferred.
• Ability to work in a high‑volume, multilingual environment and to prioritize under pressure.
• Willingness to participate in shift work, weekends, after‑hours duty and emergency support.

Required skills

• Proficiency with electronic health records and pharmacy information systems.
• Knowledge of stock management, cold‑chain handling and formulary compliance.
• Strong attention to detail for accurate data entry and documentation.
