Personal Lines Underwriter – Independent Brokerage

About the role

Our client, an independent insurance brokerage based in Umhlanga, is looking for an experienced Personal Lines Underwriter. The role involves managing the full underwriting lifecycle for personal insurance products and ensuring compliance with regulatory and insurer requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of personal lines clients, handling quotations, new business, policy issuance, amendments, renewals and cancellations.
• Assess risks and determine appropriate cover, premiums, terms, conditions and excesses in line with insurer mandates.
• Underwrite products such as motor, household contents, buildings, all‑risks and personal liability.
• Review policy documentation for accuracy, identify gaps and propose improvements.
• Maintain accurate records and administration on the Cardinal Broker Operating System.
• Liaise with clients, insurers, brokers, claims teams and other stakeholders to resolve queries.
• Negotiate premiums and source alternative terms where required.
• Ensure compliance with FAIS, TCF, POPIA, internal procedures and underwriting guidelines.

Required profile

• RE5 certification.
• FAIS‑compliant NQF Level 4/5 insurance qualification with at least 120 credits.
• Minimum five years of personal lines underwriting experience in the short‑term insurance market.
• Strong technical knowledge of personal lines products, policy structures and relevant legislation.
