About the role
The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is seeking a qualified field researcher to join the South African Polar Research Infrastructure (SAPRI) on Marion Island. The role involves intensive overwintering fieldwork focused on killer whales and seals, requiring rigorous observation, data collection and equipment management under extreme weather conditions.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor and collect behavioural data on killer whales and seals, including photographic mark‑recapture and biopsy sampling.
- Deploy, retrieve and maintain satellite relay data loggers and other electronic equipment.
- Conduct extensive walking surveys (4,000–6,000 km) in wet, windy conditions while wearing gumboots.
- Manage large electronic datasets, perform sample processing, and carry out data analysis in the laboratory.
- Work remotely in the field without direct supervision and collaborate with the base research station team.
Required profile
- Meticulous observation, note‑taking and record‑keeping abilities.
- Experience handling electronic datasets and field electronics.
- Ability to work independently in harsh, cold, and wet environments for extended periods.
- Physical fitness for long walks and field tasks in extreme conditions.
Required skills
- Satellite device deployment and retrieval.
- Photographic mark‑recapture techniques.
- Biopsy sampling and measurement of marine mammals.
