About the role
An international mining group is seeking an experienced Occupational Hygiene Manager to lead and govern occupational hygiene programmes at its Northern Cape mining operations. The role combines technical oversight, regulatory compliance and team leadership to protect worker health and meet ESG standards.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the Occupational Hygiene function at the assigned mining operation, implementing site‑specific strategies aligned with Group standards.
- Oversee exposure monitoring for dust, noise, heat stress, ventilation, gases, fumes, chemicals and ergonomic risks, and maintain Occupational Risk Exposure Profiles for all job categories.
- Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act, DMRE requirements and relevant Codes of Practice, preparing statutory reports and leading inspections.
- Develop and implement exposure‑control strategies, partnering with engineering and processing teams to apply engineering controls and drive continuous improvement.
- Manage occupational hygiene data integrity, monitoring systems and digital reporting platforms, supporting real‑time technology deployment.
- Provide expert advice to operational leadership, represent hygiene on HSE and production forums, and engage with DMRE, SAIOH and specialist consultants.
- Lead and develop the site hygiene team, handling budgets, forecasts and performance management.
Required profile
- Degree in Occupational Hygiene, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene or related field, with registration with SAIOH or equivalent.
- 8‑10 years of occupational hygiene experience in mining, including 3‑5 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Proven experience with open‑pit or underground mining environments and engagement with DMRE inspectors.
- Valid driver’s licence, medical fitness and legal appointment under MHSA sections 12(1) or 7(2).
Required skills
- Dust, noise, heat stress, ventilation, chemical and ergonomic monitoring.
- Use of occupational hygiene software, sampling equipment and digital reporting tools.
- Knowledge of MHSA, DMRE guidelines, SANS standards and industry best practice.
- Ability to develop exposure control strategies and conduct risk assessments.
