Night Nurse – Residential Care

About the role

Highlands House provides residential care for frail Jewish older adults in Cape Town. The Registered Night Nurse will lead the night care service, delivering safe and attentive nursing care while supervising night staff and ensuring clear handover to the day team.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct regular night rounds, monitor unwell residents and provide nursing procedures as needed.
• Administer medication, address concerns with residents’ GPs and prepare morning medication.
• Assess residents after falls, respond to emergencies and liaise with doctors, hospitals and families.
• Manage deaths in accordance with established guidelines.
• Record nursing care on Healthbridge EHR and incidents on Futurecare resident management site.
• Supervise and allocate night staff, promote policy adherence and identify training needs.
• Perform statutory emergency trolley, equipment and stock checks and ensure emergency exits are accessible.

Required profile

• Professional nursing qualification with current registration on the South African Nursing Council.
• Experience in residential, geriatric or long‑term care is advantageous.
• Ability to supervise care staff and lead a night team calmly during emergencies.
• Strong communication with residents, families, doctors and multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent administration and organisational skills, able to prioritise resident needs overnight.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Experience using Healthbridge electronic health record system.
• Familiarity with Futurecare resident management site and electronic incident reporting.
