National Spokesperson – Media Relations Lead

About the role

Responsible for all media‑related issues within NUMSA, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa. The role maintains strong relationships with media institutions and oversees the union’s public communication strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the official spokesperson for NUMSA and manage all media contracts.
• Develop and implement media, public relations and social‑media programmes.
• Create organisational literature, copy, edit, proof‑read and revise communications for various platforms.
• Design and execute marketing communication campaigns.
• Research media coverage, industry trends and conduct extensive media outreach.
• Prepare briefing material, coordinate press interviews and respond to media enquiries.
• Write and distribute press releases to targeted media outlets.

Required profile

• Matriculation certificate.
• Journalism degree or diploma (e.g., BA Communication).
• Minimum eight years of relevant experience, including at least five years as a spokesperson in a political environment.
• High‑level written and verbal communication skills.
• Strategic thinking with strong facilitation abilities.
• Ability to remain composed under pressure.
