Migration Health Nurse Assistant

About the role

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is recruiting a Migration Health Nurse Assistant for its Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Pretoria, South Africa. Reporting to the Senior Migration Health Nurse under the supervision of the Chief of Mission and Sub-Regional Director, the postholder supports nurses and migrants/refugees in the migration health assessment process.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with daily nursing activities in the clinic, including medical examinations (vital signs, weight, height, visual acuity) and blood, urine or sputum collection
• Support TB management (DOTS), infection prevention and control, pre-departure procedures, sample transport to the laboratory and liaison with the lab
• Inform migrants and refugees about chest X-ray, immunization and sputum testing, and treatments and referrals
• Take comprehensive histories, collect biodata, verify IDs and keep a register of applicants undergoing health tests
• Follow health assessment checklists and SOPs, maintain universal precautions and help with medical emergencies and chronic case management
• Arrange specialist consultations and keep accurate records, including uploading medical reports to databases
• Perform national medical escort duties when needed, and assist with checking medical invoices
• Prepare lists of drugs and supplies, take part in inventory and coordinate with administration and finance

Required profile

• Certificate or high school diploma with three years of relevant experience, or an intermediate nursing degree with at least three years of relevant experience
• Fluency in English (oral and written); proficiency in other IOM official languages is assessed during selection
• Experience in TB management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, laboratory testing or public health is an advantage
• Must meet medical fitness, visa/security clearance and residency requirements
