Mechanical Fitter – Railway Maintenance

About the role

We are looking for a qualified Mechanical Fitter with hands‑on experience in railway maintenance to join our team in Johannesburg East. The role focuses on keeping locomotives, wagons and related mechanical equipment safe, reliable and operational.

Key responsibilities

• Perform planned, preventive and breakdown maintenance on rolling stock, locomotives, wagons and rail‑related mechanical equipment.
• Diagnose mechanical faults and execute repairs to minimise downtime.
• Strip, inspect, repair and re‑assemble components such as gearboxes, couplings, bearings, pumps, compressors and braking systems.
• Carry out routine inspections in line with maintenance schedules and rail safety standards.
• Replace worn or damaged parts and restore equipment to serviceable condition.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals and maintenance procedures.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete job cards.
• Participate in shutdowns, emergency repairs and continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Trade Test Certificate as a Mechanical Fitter (Red Seal).
• N3 Mechanical Engineering qualification or higher.
• 3–5 years of experience in railway or rolling‑stock maintenance.
• Proven experience with locomotives, wagons, bogies, braking systems or similar equipment.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to work shifts, overtime and standby.
