Mechanical Engineer – Mining (Northern Cape)

About the role

A leading mining house in the Northern Cape is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to take accountability for engineering activities within an assigned plant/section. The role combines technical leadership, operational optimisation and compliance with statutory and SHERQ requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Assume legal responsibility for the engineering section in line with statutory requirements.
• Develop and execute tactical engineering strategies aligned with operational objectives.
• Manage engineering budgets, cost control and financial performance.
• Drive continuous improvement, optimisation and change initiatives across the plant.
• Lead and develop engineering teams and oversee sectional organisational structures.
• Manage contractors, service providers and workshop facilities.
• Provide engineering input to capital projects, plant expansions and improvement initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act, Codes of Practice and SHERQ standards.

Required profile

• National Diploma (NQF Level 6) or Degree in Engineering (NQF Level 7); GCC – Mines and Works B is mandatory.
• Minimum 8 years total experience, including at least 5 years operational engineering/production in mining and 2 years operational management with GCC responsibility.
• Valid Code B driver’s licence, all relevant mine licences and medical fitness to mining standards.
• Post‑graduate qualification such as MBA, MBL or MDP is advantageous.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of mining engineering, plant operations and the Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Experience with SHERQ compliance, engineering management and maintenance.
• Proficiency in root‑cause analysis, first‑line maintenance and problem‑solving techniques.
• Ability to manage contractors, capital projects, budgeting and cost control.
• Intermediate proficiency in MS Office and engineering software (Projects, JDE, Achiever, Isometrix).
