Machinist (CNC / Conventional)

About the role

Sulzer is hiring a Machinist (CNC / Conventional) in Johannesburg. The role covers machining components and parts on driven machinery in line with Sulzer standards, engineering specifications, quality requirements and customer expectations. It suits experienced support-level staff who work largely autonomously and only need closer supervision in non-routine situations.

Key responsibilities

• Machining: perform pre-machining and final machining to drawings, select tooling, jigs and fixtures with the Supervisor, and carry out turning, milling, drilling, grinding and marking-off.
• Quality control: inspect finished work with micrometers, verniers, dial indicators and bore gauges, read engineering drawings and production orders, and report deviations.
• Operational compliance: follow work instructions, complete production documentation, support Lean manufacturing and maintain 5S standards and good housekeeping.
• Safety: comply with HSE policies, apply the Take 5 and Stop Work for Safety principles, attend toolbox talks, conduct one safety observation per week and report unsafe conditions and near misses.

Required profile

• Qualified trade-tested Turner or Fitter & Turner.
• Proven experience in machining environments, including turning, milling, drilling, grinding and marking-off, and operating conventional and/or CNC machines.
• Good understanding of engineering drawings, geometric tolerancing and dimensional inspection.
• Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and 5S principles.

Required skills

• CNC and manual machining knowledge.
• Use of precision measuring instruments.
• Siemens and Fanuc control systems are advantageous.
