Legal Officer – Gender Equality Commission

About the role

The Commission for Gender Equality is seeking a qualified Legal Officer to manage complaints, represent complainants in Equality Court, and support the development of gender‑focused legislation. This position plays a pivotal role in monitoring court operations and fostering effective dispute resolution.

Key responsibilities

• Handle and investigate public complaints and refer appropriate matters to the Equality Court.
• Litigate on behalf of complainants and monitor provincial court operations.
• Conduct mediation and conciliation to resolve disputes.
• Draft gender‑perspective inputs for proposed legislation, regulations and prescripts.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual performance reports.
• Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and ensure implementation of the Annual Performance Plan.
• Identify systematic complaint issues for monitoring and litigation.

Required profile

• Matric qualification.
• B.Proc or LLB degree (LL.M advantageous).
• Admission as an Attorney of the High Court with at least three years post‑admission experience.
• Strong knowledge of the South African Constitution, human rights law and Equality Court processes.
• Demonstrated experience in gender‑related legal matters.
