Legal Intern – Governance Internship

About the role

ActionAid International is seeking a motivated Legal Intern to join its Governance function at the Global Secretariat hubs in Johannesburg and Nairobi. This six‑month internship offers practical exposure to international non‑profit governance, legal advisory work, and compliance monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct legal research on corporate governance and regulatory compliance, and help prepare guidance notes for staff and governance bodies.
• Assist in preparing documentation for International Board, Board Committees, and General Assembly meetings, and maintain governance records and filing systems.
• Manage legal document filing and ensure compliance with organisational requirements.
• Support compliance monitoring of statutory and regulatory obligations and contribute to risk‑management initiatives.
• Help review and update organisational policies to align with legal and governance standards.

Required profile

• Recent graduate or candidate awaiting admission to legal practice with a bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) or equivalent.
• Strong written and spoken English, able to conduct legal research and present findings clearly.
• Organised, detail‑oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks independently while collaborating across locations.
