Legal Counsel – Retail (Gauteng)

About the role

The role provides business‑focused legal advice, contract support and product guidance to retail investment businesses. You will use deep knowledge of South African financial services regulation to draft contracts, support compliance, resolve queries and keep the business ahead of legislative changes.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of legal documents, including investment management agreements, service level agreements, client‑facing documents, product terms, marketing material and data agreements.
• Continuously improve contract templates and manage the full contract lifecycle.
• Monitor, identify and report legal risks and regulatory developments across projects, policies and systems.
• Provide commercially‑focused legal advice to internal stakeholders on contracting, product queries, operational processes and legislative implementation.
• Support product development and project initiatives, collaborating with tax, marketing, compliance and IT teams.
• Work with compliance and risk teams to manage emerging risks, embed good governance and implement internal controls.

Required profile

• Completed LLB degree.
• Admitted Attorney (CFP designation advantageous).
• 3–5 years post‑admission legal experience, preferably within a LISP or wealth‑management environment.
• Strong understanding of wealth platforms, retail and retirement investments, and financial products.
• Robust knowledge of South African financial sector laws, including FAIS, FICA, CISCA, the Insurance Act, the Pension Funds Act and POPIA.
• Proven experience in complex contract drafting.
