Lecturer – Violent Histories and Repair

About the role

The Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest (AVReQ) at Stellenbosch University seeks a Lecturer to lead and develop its interdisciplinary programmes focused on violent histories, memory, and repair. The role combines teaching, research, curriculum development and public engagement within a decolonial and Global South perspective.

Key responsibilities

• Co‑ordinate the Centre’s academic programmes, including the MPhil in Violent Histories and Repair.
• Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervise research students and mentor them.
• Develop curricula and integrate research findings into teaching materials.
• Conduct research, publish in accredited journals and secure external grant funding.
• Participate in public seminars, social‑impact activities and related administrative duties.

Required profile

• PhD in humanities, social sciences or a relevant interdisciplinary field.
• Proven experience in postgraduate teaching and supervision.
• Record of publications in accredited journals or with recognised academic publishers.
• Research engagement with violent histories, transgenerational memory, historical trauma or related themes.
• Experience in interdisciplinary environments, familiarity with Global South perspectives and decolonial pedagogies.
• Professional proficiency in English and ability to work in a multilingual setting.
