Lecturer – Private and Mercantile Law

About the role

The Law Lecturer will deliver high‑quality teaching, learning and assessment in private and mercantile law, ensuring students develop the knowledge, practical skills and ethical foundations required for academic success and professional practice. The role also involves contributing to curriculum development, student support and continuous programme improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, prepare and deliver lectures both on‑site and online.
• Provide feedback to coordinating lecturers and programme coordinators to enhance teaching and learning.
• Participate in programme review initiatives and contribute to module design.
• Assess student work, provide constructive feedback and conduct post‑moderation.
• Support students at risk through consultation and guidance.
• Engage in scholarship of teaching and learning, including professional development.
• Participate in campus administration, community engagement and departmental meetings.

Required profile

• At least an LLM degree in the relevant field (South African qualification preferred); an LLD or registration for an LLD is advantageous.
• Relevant teaching experience in higher education.
• Demonstrated research track record.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Strong verbal and written communication, presentation and facilitation skills.
• Willingness to engage in academic scholarship and to teach across multiple law subjects.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Canvas learning management system.
• Familiarity with legal databases such as JutaStat, LexisNexis and Sabinet.
